The Ultimate
Calabria Road Trip.
Three curated day trips from Lilja’s Flat — the Citron Coast, the Pollino peaks, and the Maratea headland. Built for April and May, when the roads are empty, the light is soft, and the coast is yours.
Skip the bridge. Take the car. Find the soul of Calabria before August arrives.
A different way to see the South
Most Calabria travel advice stops at the beach. This one starts at the driveway. Lilja’s Flat sits on a hill in San Nicola Arcella — one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, freshly named Top 5 at Borgo dei Borghi 2026. The position is the point. From this base, three of the most spectacular day trips on the Italian peninsula are a tank of petrol away: the Riviera dei Cedri to the south, the Pollino mountains inland, and Maratea to the north.
A car here is not a limitation — it is the whole experience. And in April and May, the SS18 coastal road is empty, the mountain passes are green with spring, and parking that would be a war zone in August is a non-event. This is the window.
Why April & May beat August
The Citron Coast
The Riviera dei Cedri is named after the rare Calabrian citron — a fruit grown almost nowhere else on earth. The drive tracks the Tyrrhenian south through Scalea, Cirella, and Diamante. Tiny beaches on one side, citron orchards climbing the hills on the other. This is Calabria at its most painterly.
The Pollino Peaks
From sea to summit in 45 minutes. Pollino is Italy’s largest national park — a wild sprawl of limestone peaks, ancient beech forests, and Albanian villages that still speak a 15th-century dialect. In April and May the air is crisp, the wildflowers are out, and every curve of the road reveals another valley.
Maratea & the Christ
Cross into Basilicata. Maratea is the only town on the region’s short stretch of Tyrrhenian coast — a cliffside warren of medieval lanes crowned by a 21-metre Christ the Redeemer, second only to Rio’s. In May, the SS18 coastal road north is breathtaking and nearly empty.
Getting set up, properly
A car is not optional on this coast — it is the unlock. Here’s how to set yourself up for a smooth week, with no surprises.
Where to rent
Pick up at Lamezia Terme (SUF) or Naples (NAP) airports, or at Scalea train station. Sicily By Car for Lamezia; JAD Car Rental for Scalea — local and flexible.
Fuel strategy
Fill up in Scalea before any day trip. Mountain villages often have only one pump and it may be closed Sundays. A full tank gets you anywhere in this guide and back.
Groceries that matter
CONAD Scalea is the biggest supermarket — far better stocked than the village shops. Stop on the way home from any trip. Lilja’s Flat has a full kitchen; take advantage.
The bridge question
The access bridge into the village is narrow and high-traffic in peak summer. In April and May it’s a non-issue. Either way, the car lets you skip it entirely for day trips.
Make it your basecamp.
Sea-view apartment, sleeps 4–5, direct booking, best rate. April and May are still open — including long-stay rates at 40% off with code LONGSTAY.
